KODIAK-BOWIE SEAMOUNT CHAIN
The 'Kodiak-Bowie Seamount chain' is a seamount chain in southeastern Gulf of Alaska stretching from the Aleutian Trench in the north to Bowie Seamount, the youngest volcano in the chain, which lies 180 kilometers west of the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia.[1] The oldest volcano in the chain is the Kodiak Seamount. The Kodiak-Bowie Seamount chain was created by the Bowie hotspot as the Pacific Plate drifted in a northwesterly direction, leaving a trail of seamounts in its wake. Although the Kodiak Seamount is the oldest extant seamount in the Kodiak-Bowie chain, the question of whether there were older seamounts in the chain which have already been subducted into the trench remains open, and is the subject of ongoing scientific research.
Volcanoes in the chain from north to south include:
★ Kodiak Seamount (24 m.y. old)[2]
★ Giacomini Seamount (21 m.y. old)
★ Pratt Seamount (age unknown)
★ Welker Seamount (15 m.y. old)
★ Dickens Seamount (~4 m.y. old)
★ Denson Seamount (18 .m.y. old)
★ Bowie Seamount (>0.7 m.y. old)
