'Kuldīga district' (Latvian: ''Kuldīgas rajons'') is located at western part of
Latvia along both sides of the
Venta River. Kuldīga district has borders with 5 other districts:
Ventspils District,
Talsi District,
Tukums District,
Saldus District and
Liepāja District. The current borders of the district were established in 1950.
Kuldīga district occupies area of 2,499.87
km². It has population of 37,119. Its capital is
Kuldīga city with population of 13,335.
Economy
Railroads going from
Riga to
Liepāja and from
Liepāja to
Ventspils (which is now closed) cross the county. Also, one of the main roads in Latvia - route A-9 from
Riga to
Liepāja go through the territory. Main occupations are
agriculture,
wood processing,
forestry, and
fish farming.
Terrain
On the North West side of the district is Piejuras plain. In the middle are the - Rietumkurzemes height with hills, which are 100 - 120 m high above sea level, with the highest point Hill Vardupe - 140 m. In the NE side of county is Austrumkurzemes height (60 - 110 m. above sea level) Hilly relief covers 35% of district territory. There are more than 40 rivers longer than 5 km, and 48 lakes bigger than 1 km². The largest rivers are the
Venta River and
Abava. Forests cover about 48% of district territory.
The average temperature in January is about -3, but in July +16.8°C. The amount of precipitation is 600-700 mm per year.
