LNER CLASS A4 4489 DOMINION OF CANADA
60010 'Dominion of Canada' is an LNER Class A4 steam locomotive. It is a 4-6-2 locomotive built to the same design by Sir Nigel Gresley as the more famous ''Mallard''.
It was built in Doncaster in May 1937 (Works Number 1854). It was originally to be named Buzzard but received Woodcock instead and was renamed Dominion of Canada June 1937.
Allocated to Kings Cross, London, from new, but also did a spell from Grantham, England, and finally allocated to Aberdeen in October 1963.
It was fitted with a bell presented by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1938, and a special five note chrome whistle in 1937.
Canada's Coat of Arms was on the side of the cab. The loco achieved 109.5 m.p.h. down Stoke Bank in 1937.
Built for the LNER in 1937, it was originally numbered 4489. It was renumbered 10 under the LNER 1946 renumbering scheme and after nationalisation in 1948 BR added 60000 to its number so it became 60010.
Since May 1965 it has been preserved at the Canadian Railroad Historical Association near Montreal. Currently stored in a secure building with other equipment, the engine is good cosmetic shape.
