'La Marque' (formerly 'Lamarque') is a city in Galveston County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown Metropolitan Area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 13,682. Located northwest of Galveston near oil fields.
In the 2000s, rising real estate costs in Galveston forced many families to move to other areas, including La Marque. This meant an influx of children out of Galveston ISD and into other school districts [1].
La Marque is located at (29.366684, -94.973922).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.9 km² (14.3 mi²). 36.8 km² (14.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.28%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 13,682 people, 5,237 households, and 3,713 families residing in the city. The population density was 371.5/km² (962.0/mi²). There were 5,732 housing units at an average density of 155.6/km² (403.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 55.84% White, 30.69% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.21% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.43% of the population.
There were 5,237 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,841, and the median income for a family was $39,081. Males had a median income of $32,099 versus $27,292 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,518. About 13.5% of families and 17.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.6% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.
Most of the city is served by La Marque Independent School District. La Marque High School serves that portion.
Small portions of La Marque are served by the Dickinson Independent School District, Hitchcock Independent School District, and the Santa Fe Independent School District.
The La Marque High School Cougars have consistently appeared atop the state rankings in Texas 4A Division II football over the past decade. The Cougars' debut to the Texas state finals in 1986 for the 5A title didn't fare too well for them; they were outscored by Plano 24-7. La Marque made its second trip to the State finals in 1993 where they faced the Stephenville Yellow Jackets and eventually lost. La Marque would make it back to the finals in 1994 only to lose to Stephenville again 32-17. The Cougars fought back and won the state championship the next three years in a row ('95, '96, '97). In all three of those matches La Marque faced the Denison Yellow Jackets. In 1997, neighboring city and arch rival, Texas City also won the football state championship (for 4A Div. I). La Marque made it to the finals again in 1998 only to lose to Stephenville for the third time. The Cougars made the trip to the state finals six years in a row. La Marque would later go on to win the state championship in 2003 and 2006.
All of La Marque is served by the College of the Mainland.
The city owns the La Marque Public Library.
