LAPIS MANALIS
The '''lapis manalis''' (Latin: "stone of the Manes") was a sacred stone used in the Roman religion as part of a ceremony called the '''aquaelicium''' (Latin: "calling the waters") which sought to produce rain in times of drought.[1]
During the ceremony, the ''pontifices'' had the stone brought from its usual resting place, a temple of Mars near the Porta Capena, into the Senate. Offerings were made to Jupiter petitioning for rain, and water was ceremonially poured over the stone.[2] Over time, due to its association with the Manes, the ''lapis manalis'' came to be viewed as the cover to an entrance to the underworld, though the stone by the Porta Capena was not connected with the ''mundus Cereris''.
