LAS HURDES

'Las Hurdes' or 'Las Jurdes' is a ''comarca'' in Cáceres Province of Extremadura, one of Spain's seventeen Autonomous Communities, bordering Salamanca Province of Castile-Leon to the north.
Las Hurdes covers an area of 470 km², bordered with Sierra de Gata to the north, and the valley of Río Ambroz to the south. It is an arid region. Las Hurdes was once one of the poorest regions in Spain. The traditional economic activity is agriculture: olives, potatoes, cereals, and cork oaks. In recent years, the economy of the ''comarca'' has flourished due to tourism.
It is also the subject of a 1933 short film by Luis Buñuel about the indigenous people (''hurdanos''), shot around the town of La Alberca, called ''. Las Hurdes has been long associated with its presentation in the film.
