President meets Opposition Leader
Feb 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party yesterday expressed its fullest support for the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, at the conclusion of a crucial meeting between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, a government report said. Reporting the positive outcome of the meeting, Sri Lankan media reported that the opposition leader had said that since the interim proposals presented by the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) had included the implementation of the 13th Amendment, and since it was the law of the land, his party would not oppose as it has no objection to the implementation of existing laws. A media release issued yesterday by the President's Media Unit said the two leaders also discussed the 17th Amendment. One daily stated that "the opposition leader also called on the government to appoint the Constitutional Council immediately, and to activate the 17th Amendment to the Constitution to ensure good governance in the country. He also requested the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) to submit a further report on the progress of its deliberations to date."

Malaysian Opposition Leader Bailed
ANCHOR:
Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was bailed on sodomy charges today. This allows him to push ahead with his bid for power. STORY:
This is the second time Anwar has faced what he calls politically motivated sodomy charges. He was jailed and barred from office for corruption and sodomy in the late 1980s.
He says the new charges were designed to discredit him as he seeks to entice 30 government legislators to join his opposition alliance by September 16 . They plan to take power from the coalition that has ruled Malaysia for over 50 years. [Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysian Opposition Leader]:
"All these - (are) trumped up charges so we will follow what will happen next." Anwar says the prosecution's request to transfer his case to a Kuala Lumpur high court is "trial by ambush." Anwar is allowed bail until September 24, when the judge will decide on the court transfer request. His bid for power comes after Malaysia's Barisan Nasional coalition lost its two-thirds parliamentary majority for the first time.
Recently, the government faced a row over bitter racial comments from the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the main party, calling the ethnic Chinese in Malaysia "immigrants".
The comments provoked a sharp backlash from Chinese parties in the ruling coalition. [Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysian Opposition Leader]:
"The Government should act swiftly against all these perpetrators of racial hatred but I must caution that this issue is an incitement by UMNO leaders to deflect attention from corruption, abuse of power, mismanagement of the economy and the impending imminent changes happening in this country." Anwar insists that he is on track to be in power by September 16 and that he will win over the 30 government legislators he needed to do so.

Zimbabwean opposition leader withdraws
Zimbabwean opposition leader withdraws from presidential run-off WATCH VIDEO Source: CCTV.com | 06-23-2008 09:37 Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has withdrawn from the country's presidential run-off, scheduled for Friday. Tsvangirai said casting a vote for him could cost voters their lives MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he is pulling out of Friday's presidential runoff election against President Robert Mugabe due to mounting violence and intimidation against his party. The announcement came after the opposition Movement for Democratic Change was forced to abandon a rally in Harare on Sunday for the presidential runoff on security grounds. Tsvangirai also called on the United Nations, the African Union and the southern African Development Community to intervene and make sure the people of Zimbabwe are protected from ongoing violence in the country. Tsvangirai said, "We in the MDC have resolved that we will no longer participate in this violent illegitimate sham of an election process. The conditions prevailing as of today do not permit holding of a credible poll." The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission set June the 27th as the date for the presidential run-off in which Tsvangirai had been expected to challenge Mugabe. In the March election, Tsvangirai won 47 percent of the vote to Mugabe's 43 percent. But Tsvangirai was short of the 51 percent needed to win outright. The Zimbabwean government has repeatedly denied directing violence and intimidation against the opposition. And government officials say it will proceed with the presidential run-off unless Tsvangirai formally withdraws from the poll in writing. Earlier on, thousands of youth militia loyal to Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, armed with iron bars and other weapons, attacked journalists and forced election observer teams to flee the scheduled venue of the MDC rally. Brown vs. Cameron during Queen's Speech debate
State Opening of Parliament. Closing remarks of Prime Minister Gordon Brown during the 2007 Queen's Speech debate with Leader of the Opposition David Cameron in a sceptical similar to PMQs (Prime Minister's Questions). During the discussion, David Cameron refers to Brown in the first person, which is technically out-of-order in the House of Commons, but the Speaker doesn't do anything about it. When asked by Cameron about inheritance tax Brown gives an immediate and direct answer, however he then evades the question about the election that never was. I wonder why?

What are the real lessons from Denmark, Norway and Sweden? http://www.cato.org/event.php?eventid=3688 The video concludes with Tony Leon (MP Leader, Democratic Alliance) who draws the connection between Capitalism and the end of apartheid April 27, 2007, will mark 13 years since the African National Congress came to power in South Africa. A rare scene: Lord Chancellor is given ASBO
House of Commons debates Wednesday, 23 April 2008 Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister David Cameron: The truth is that under this Government, yes, I'll tell you what is more: under this Government, there are 600,000 more people are in extreme poverty than when the Government came to power. The Prime Minister talks about the central issue. The central issue here is his massive loss of authority. Was there ever anything more humiliating than a Prime Minister breaking off his talks with the President, asking for an outside line in the White House to beg one of his PPS not to resign? This is what Labour MPs—[Interruption.] They should be quiet and listen. This is what Labour MPs are saying—[Interruption.] Speaker: Order. Let the Leader of the Opposition speak—[Interruption.] The honourable lady is too noisy. So is the Lord High Chancellor—that is his title now. He is too noisy as well. David Cameron: It is not often that you have to give the Lord Chancellor an ASBO. This is what Labour MPs are saying about their Prime Minister...
Tsvangirai in Presidential Runoff Against Mugabe
The Election Commission announced Friday, May 2nd that the leader of the opposition party beat the incumbent in the March presidential election, but not by enough to avoid a runoff. President Robert Mugabe has accepted the results and pledged to compete in a runoff. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said he would not run. The United States and Britain say the results lack credibility after the government delayed releasing the count by more than a month. VOA's Chris Simkins reports
