LEMON BAY HIGH SCHOOL
'Lemon Bay High School' is a high school located in Englewood, Florida.
Lemon Bay opened its doors in 1972 as an elementary school. In 1976 Lemon bay became a junior high with grades 7 through 12. In 1983, concurrent with the construction of L.A.Ainger Middle School, grade 7 was phased out with grade 8 being phased out the following year.
A major renovation completed in 1987 gave the school a new administration wing. A community swimming pool was added in 1989, and an auditorium and new media center in 1991.
The standard english, mathematics, science and history courses core requirements for all students. These four types of courses can all be taken at Advanced Placement (allowing the awarding of college credit based on how the student performs on a national examination) and/or honors level.
Many electives are also available, including television production, drafting, journalism, french language, spanish language, and physical education courses.
'Theater'
The theater program is led by Director Jen Kelly. The theater program puts on several productions during the school year, along with one during the summer in which elementary and junior high students participate. In the past, the theater program has put on productions such as The Music Man, Anything Goes, Seussical the Musical, Les Miserables, Swing!, Oklahoma!, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Cats (musical). The thespian troupe at the school has also achieved success with district and state level performances
'Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC)'
The NJROTC is a program set up by the United States Navy. Students in NJROTC wear a modified U.S. Navy uniform once a week and, as part of curriculum, must pass a physical education test once every nine weeks. Student leaders are in direct control of the affairs of the unit, and are supervised by two retired United States Navy instructors - Master Chief Petty Officer Rick Ellis, and Lieutenant Commander John Faris.
'Band'
The band is made up of Marching band (fall semester), Symphonic band, percussion ensemble, and jazz band.
The band is directed by Shane Ainsworth. The Marching Mantas participated in performance at the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida in January of 2007 along with several other high school marching bands.
'Model United Nations'
The Model United Nations club on campus has achieved success in competitions taking place around the state, including at the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, and the Florida High School Model United Nations(FHSMUN). The school was also a founding member of the competition held at Florida Gulf Coast University, the Southwest Florida Model United Nations Competition.
For home sports games, Lemon Bay has a track, football field, baseball fields, swimming pool and gymnasium (for wrestling, basketball, etc).
