LEV TOLSTOY (SETTLEMENT)
'Lev Tolstoy' () is a settlement in the northern part of Lipetsk Oblast, Russia. It is the administrative center of Lev-Tolstovsky District. Population: 8,800 (2005 est.); 9,035 (2002 Census); 9,139 (1989 Census).
The settlement was founded in 1890 as 'Astapovo' (Аста́пово) railway station on the intersection of the Kozlov–Volovo and Moscow–Yelets routes. Leo Tolstoy, a famous Russian novelist, fell ill at Astapovo station and died here in 1910. In 1918 (1920 according to other sources) the station was renamed Lev Tolstoy.
