History
The present station is the third "Lewes Station", there having been significant changes to the tracks running through the town during the 19th Century, which necessitated relocation and remodelling of the station. Most notably, there used to be a line heading north to Uckfield and on to London via Eridge - this line also had trains to Tunbridge Wells West. This line was an alternative route to London which would be useful today for increasing capacity and relieving the network during engineering work. However the line between Lewes and Uckfield has been closed and lifted, although there have always been campaigns to re-open it. Branching off the Lewes to Uckfield section at Culver Farm was the lower portion of the Bluebell Railway, and a portion of this remains as a preserved railway.
