LIMERICK WEST (DáIL ÉIREANN CONSTITUENCY)
'Limerick West' is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. The constituency has an electorate of 53,879 and at present is served by 3 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.
It is located in the western part of the County Limerick. It is a very rural, conservative constituency, with few large towns. In some elections, such as in 1982, only Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael candidates appeared on the ballot. In 1987, a Progressive Democrats candidate was elected. This was the first, and so far only, time a candidate from a party other than Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael was elected in that constituency since it came into being in 1948. No candidate from a left-wing party has ever been elected in this constituency.
