LIMPLEY STOKE

The village is dominated by the Dundas Aqueduct on the Kennet and Avon Canal

'Limpley Stoke' is a medium-sized village in West Wiltshire, below the A36 road in the Avon Valley, between Bath and Freshford.
Limpley Stoke civil parish also includes the hamlet of 'Waterhouse', and the outskirts of the Somerset village of Midford, and had a population of 637 in 2001.[1]
Limpley Stoke is a long-established village whose history dates back over 1,000 years. Attractions for early residents included a fordable crossing over the river Avon, good grazing pastures and accessible local limestone for house building.
Attractions today include excellent road and rail links to Bath, Bristol and London, the attractive Kennet and Avon canal and excellent cycle tracks. Full transport information is given in the right hand box.
The village is divided by its steep geography and an idiosyncratic county boundary into Lower Stoke, Middle Stoke and Upper Stoke, the latter extending into Waterhouse and down to the end of Midford Lane.
The village has two pubs, one of which, The Hop Pole, was used in the filming of The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins.
St Mary's church dates back to the 13th Century and is well worth a visit.
Scratched on its inside walls are crosses, said to have been made by local knights before leaving for the crusades.
There is little local industry to speak of, although there are a number of working farms, with most of those working commuting to Bath, Bristol and elsewhere. There are two popular hotels and two pubs in Limpley Stoke (see "Businesses" tab). The nearest shops and Post Offices are in Winsley and Freshford.
The local school is situated in Freshford and is a C of E Voluntary Controlled Primary School and serves Limpley Stoke, Freshford and Hinton Charterhouse. There are currently 130 pupils.
The surrounding countryside is predominantly hilly in character, agricultural and designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Limpley Stoke is adjacent to Freshford and the two villages share many services and community activities.
