LIST OF CITIES IN LATVIA
There are 77 'cities in Latvia' (''Latvian: Pilsētas''). By Latvian law city rights are granted to settlements that are centers of culture and manufacturing with well developed social infrastructure and public utilities, and have at least 2000 residents, however in special cases, if settlement fulfils all other requirements, it can have fewer residents to become a city. The cities are further divided in Regional cities (''Latvian: Rajonu pilsētas'') and Cities of Republic (''Latvian: Republikas pilsētas'') more commonly known as major cities (''Latvian: Lielpilsētas''). To become large city, a city must have well developed industry, transport, public utilities and social infrastructure or significant center of culture and social care, if the city has at least 50000 residents, however, again, in special cases, if settlement fulfils all other requirements, it can have less residents to become major city.
Former cities of Latvia are entities that once had city rights and were in territory of Latvia. The main reasons why these entities have lost their status as cities of Latvia are wars and merging into larger entities.
