LIST OF GORES IN VERMONT

The state of Vermont has 255 political units, or "places". This includes 237 towns, 9 cities, 5 unincorporated towns, and 4 gores.
A gore (or a 'grant'), in the U.S. state of Vermont, is an unincorporated area of a county that is not part of any town and has limited self-government (if any, as many are uninhabited). Historically, gores were generally the result of survey errors when the land was first surveyed and the towns laid out. A gore would lie in an area between two (supposedly abutting) towns but would technically be in neither. Surrounding towns have been known to attribute and absorb a gore - e.g. the gore between Tunbridge and Royalton was eventually attributed to Tunbridge.
A gore featured prominently in the horror novel of the same name by Vermont author Joseph A. Citro.
