'The Shire of Litchfield' in the Northern Territory was established September 6th 1985. It is situated south of Darwin and Palmerston. The council governs an area of 3,100km² and includes the areas of Humpty Doo, Howard Springs and Berry Springs. The population is approximately 16,000 people. It is named after Fred Litchfield, a Territory pioneer, who explored areas of the Northern Territory from Escape Cliffs on the Timor Sea to the Daly River in 1864.
A present member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, Gerry Wood, is a former President of the Shire Council.
