Phoebe Sings to Sloth, Need a Hug? Later - On Ipanema beach
Critically endangered animals of the Mata Atlantica in Brazil are featured in this Phoebe Legere Video - with accordion jazz by Phoebe- also features one of 300 surviving golden haired lion tamarinds in the wild and the soft, gentle MURAQUI monkey!!!. FIlmed by Phoebe I include an article I wrote for RANGER RICK about MANED SLOTHS and my friend VERA who let me hold the sweet sloth you see! NEED A HUG? by Ranger Songbundle (Phoebe Legere) Everyone loves sloths. They look so COOL. Sloths move very slowly, in fact, they take life so easy that if you look at their fur under a microscope they have algae growing on them! There is one woman in Brazil who has devoted her life to protecting sloths. Vera Lucia de Oliveira is known to everyone as Sloth Woman. She Does What? Vera lives in the middle of the rain forest. There she educates young people about maned sloths, which are very rare. Maned sloths have long black hair. They look like forest Rock Stars. Vera seems to have a magic touch when it comes to sloths. Vera's sloths snuggle up in her arms and hug her like big smiley-faced teddy bears. Life on a Brazilian Farm When Vera was a little girl she lived on a farm. "I had close contact with animals, which aroused my curiosity. Due to my love for animals I decided to go to college and became an ecologist. My interest in ecology began when I realized that animals are defenseless." Vera makes her choice. When Vera grew up she became a high school biology teacher. One day, a sloth she named RICARDO appeared in a tree near her school. Vera had never seen a sloth before. "Ricardo reached out and put his arms around my neck like a big happy upside-down dog. I took him home to live in a tree in my yard." Soon she rescued more sloths. When Vera had nine sloths living in her backyard her neighbors said, "Vera, you will have to choose between people and sloths." I bet you know her choice. Vera convinced the nearby Cacao (Chocolate) Research Institute to grant a 43-acre forest area for sloth protection. She built a sloth center and she moved into the forest full time to be near her sloths. "When I was moving the animals I took the trees and vines from my house and I brought them here to the center. I wanted the sloths to feel at home in a familiar surrounding." Today Vera is Director of the maned sloth program where she teaches students about the conservation of animals and helps scientists in their research. The Importance of Staying Close to the animals Vera cares for a number of sloths who are sick or have been injured by hunters. Every morning she sees how the sloths are feeling and gives them medicine. She makes sure the sloths have enough fresh leaves to eat and she observes them carefully. " It is important to check frequently to see if they are adapting well to the new environment. I have to stay close to them so that they allow me to touch them and treat them if necessary ..." When a sloth is healthy and ready to be released she just opens the door and puts it on a tree. Vera says, "It's important to remember, sloths can't move on the ground, they only move from tree to tree. Every single tree that is cut down threatens the existence of sloths." They Need Our Help When Vera calls to her sloths they crawl down through the branches, pulling themselves along, hand over hand, hanging upside-down and seeming to smile at Sloth Woman the whole time. "They are so peaceful," she says, stroking their silvery fur. "What worries me most now is that this species is in danger of extinction. They need our help."
Release of Little Dude into Assonet Bay
"Litte Dude," a threatened diamondback terrapin, emerged on August 23rd, 2007 with 16 more live siblings from a nest on the Assonet Bay Shores Beach in Freetown. He weighed 6.6 grams at emergence, measured a smidgeon over an inch long and sported a large, pinkish yolk sac. His siblings were released within a week, but this character was "the runt of the litter," and would not likely have survived. Overwintering with the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay, "Little Dude" grew to hockey puck size and was released today, August 9th, 2008 back into his natal habitat. Carl Brodeur & the Assonet Bay community, the NMLC team and Sue Wieber Nourse of Cape Cod Consultants released "Little Dude" at 2:30 pm this afternoon (August 9th, 2008).
Bonobo Kids - Reading and Trash Pick up at Riley's Reads
How can cleaning up your beach on Martha's Vineyard help endangered apes in Africa? Well On August 30th, Island author Mathea Levine held an event at Riley's Reads in Vineyard Haven where she signed copies of her new book Im Lucy: A Day in the Life of a Young Bonobo and offered kids 20% off copies if they brought three or more pieces of beach trash theyve collected. The idea was to show the children how, if everyone does a little bit a whole lot can be accomplished. Prizes were given to the children who brought in the most beach trash with first prize being the adoption of a wild African Bonobo through Bonobo Conservation Initiative (BCI). By cleaning up the beach, the children in turn made the world a cleaner place and a more enjoyable place for all walks of life (even Bonobos!) Check out the results of a great day at Riley's Reads in Vineyard Haven, MA!
Clipperton's Dirty Secret
This musical vignette is an homage to the life that is still clinging on ever so desperately at Clippeton Atoll. I say this because we are exploiting it's waters by illegal fishing and polluting it's shore with our trash. During our expedition to Clipperton Atoll there was a tuna boat that we believe was fishing the waters of this protected Marine Sanctuary. During the course of approximately 20 dives we saw little more than a handful of sharks. The once fearful Clipperton Atoll had been finned to but a mere few reef sharks that were so afraid, they stayed off in the shadows. This piece demonstrates just how much of our waste washes ashore on some of the most remote locations in the world. There was no shortage of Coca Cola bottles or for that matter Suntori Whisky was in abundance too. So to where little toy soldiers and lots of medical waste. But the really scary stuff is all the long lines that have washed ashore. Sometimes it is in bundles on the beach other times it just wraps the reef, ensnaring life as it digs in. The Boobies and Frigates that live ashore are found on the beach with swollen bellies full of plastic. Death their only salvation to the starvation they face.

Phillip Island, Victoria
Phillip Island is a great destination for a family getaway. Under two hours drive from Melbourne, it offers diverse accommodation to choose from, wildlife experiences, and plenty of opportunities to get into the water. San Remo is the last town before leaving the mainland and the gateway to Phillip Island. Drop into the famous local fishing co-op to pick up a fresh lobster and watch the local pelicans descend on the San Remo wharf for their 11.30am daily feed. The first town on the island is the small fishing village of Newhaven -- a popular place for fishing from the pier, surfinf one of the best surf beaches in Victoria, walking along the beautiful Cape Woolamai or exploring nearby historic Churchill Island. On the south-east tip of the island is the quiet village of Rhyll. Wander through the nearby Koala Conservation Centre and Woodland to see koalas at close range or view birds as you walk through the famous wetlands at Rhyll Inlet. Cowes, the main commercial centre on Phillip Island, has a wealth of charming cafes and upmarket restaurants for visitors to enjoy.
