![]() | Off to Yosemite day6 NEVADA FALLS nevada fallsNevada Fall[1] is a 594-foot (181 m) high waterfall on Merced River in Yosemite National Park, California. It is located below the granite dome, Liberty Cap, at the west end of Little Yosemite Valley. The Emerald Pool forms on the "step" between Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall downstream. The 317-foot (97 m) high Vernal Fall is a short hike from the bottom of Nevada Fall. They form a cascade in which Merced River flows down to Yosemite Valley. This cascade is sometimes called the giant staircase, which is evident when viewed from above, at Glacier Point. The hike to the top of Nevada Fall, along the Mist Trail, is 3.4 miles (5.5 km) from the trailhead in Yosemite Valley. One must first hike to Vernal Fall and then trek another 2 miles (3.2 km) to reach the top. The Merced River rises in the high country of the Sierra Crest, springing from snowfields and glaciers on Mount Lyell, highest peak in the park. It drops steadily through U-shaped glacial canyons, running right through two sizeable alpine lakes, Washburn and Merced. As it approaches Nevada Falls it flows quietly through tranquil meanders over the almost flat floor of Little Yosemite Valley, steepening only in the last hundred yards as it accelerates down a chute and bursts forth from the cliff as Nevada Falls. Though it is the most remote of the major falls in Yosemite, Nevada is easily viewed from Glacier Point, 1300 feet above and two miles away. It is also possible to hike to the top of the falls, either by following the river up past Vernal Falls, or by taking the Panorama Trail, which traces the cliff edges all the way from Glacier Point. There is a deep green pool just above this falls. Despite fences and warning signs hikers wade and sometimes swim here, and almost every year someone is swept over the falls. As the sign bluntly warns "IF YOU SLIP AND GO OVER THE WATERFALL YOU WILL DIE." |
![]() | Excuse me Ranger...any hot spots around?? It's been tough but I finally found a hot spot in Yosemite Valley. Updates may be a little more sporadic so be patient. Today was awesome!!! This place is like nothing I've ever seen. I got up early and drove into he valley before any of the traffic. Popped my bike off the top of the truck and away I went. The bike paths are top notch so I was able to cover a lot of ground and see many of the iconic sights. Again, it's a late night so I'm going to keep this short. I've got an hour drive back to camp and I still have to cook dinner. Freeze dried chili-mac tonight! Yum! |
![]() | The Devil made me hike it The rest of this week I plan to do one day hops from point to point as I head south along the Eastern Sierras. There are a bunch of cool little lakes and volcanic features on this scenic route. Tomorrow I plan to check out Convict Lake and nearby Hot Creek. Last night I crashed in the Mono Lake visitor center parking lot. Since I saved some cash on a camp sight I decided to treat myself to a hot meal. Got me a barbecued pork sandwich at Bodie Mike's in the nearby town of Lee Vining. Since I was sleeping in a parking lot there were no trees to shade me from the sun so I woke and hit the road early. I cruised into Mammoth Ski resort where I thought about riding the gondolas to the summit and doing a little mountain biking...until I found out the lift ticket was $40! Fun but not in the budget. Instead I went off the side of Mammoth mountain and down deep into the valley below. Procured a camp sight, washed some clothes and scored so big in the personal hygiene department I almost want to stay another night! Click play to check out today's day hike if you're not bored of watching me walk through the woods yet. |

This is my first attempt at making a movie and playing around with Adobe Premier. This this is just the little 2 minute trailer but the full feature is 50 minutes. A high-quality clip is at our homepage at http://www.hnatt.com We did another tour in 2007 and the trailer for this one is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6fpoQjxN0s and also at http://www.hnatt.com This trip covered 20 national parks and monuments in the US with some lessons I learned from the first trip. |
![]() | I'm in! I got a spot nooooo problem. The Monday morning arrival plan worked perfectly! Most of the day was spent driving and getting settled in but the little bit of the park that I saw on the way in was amazing! Tomorrow I'll drive about 1.5 hours back into the valley to do all the touristy stuff, wash some clothes, and hopefully find a hotspot. Tomorrow's blog should have some incredible video. And by the way, a huge thank you to everyone whose followed this page and took the time to post comments. It's nice to know I'm not doing this alone;) |
![]() | Mountain Caribbean I set out this morning not terribly inspired to hike. I looked at the trail map and saw a few mountain lakes about 4 miles from camp. I've already seen some great mountain lakes so I wasn't that psyched to hit the trail. A little past the lakes on the map was Palisades Glacier and that sounded cool but I had a feeling it was a bit out of reach for a day hike. I marched on simply because, well, what else was I going to do? Turned out to be one of the prettiest day trips of this entire trek! Let me tell you, turquoise blue water exists outside of the Caribbean! I had no idea. I wasn't aware of it at the time I shot the video but apparently the water gets it's color from glacial silt. You'll have to google it if you want more info...that's all I know so far. I never made it to the glacier but it didn't matter. I still got a taste of it;) |
![]() | JMT 4: Meet Christina's espresso maker Fresno Bee reporter Christina Vance takes her coffee black. And she takes it backpacking. She says she can't go without the jolt she gets from an espresso in the morning. On the John Muir Trail, however, some items are luxuries that need to be left behind. But Christina's little espresso maker does not fall in that category. Watch this video (the fourth in a series of eight) to see Christina test out her trusty companion before her departure. In August 2006, eight journalists set out to hike and backpack their way through the 200-mile John Muir Trail, which connects Yosemite with Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks in central California. To read about, and see photos, as well as the rest of the videos, go to the Digital Edgie-winning blog, FresnoBeehive.com/JMT. Videos were shot, edited and produced by Will Albritton. |
![]() | Justin's First Multi-Pitch Climb The day began seven full hours before Las Vegas alarm clocks said "PM". That's 5:00am, normally too damn early for me to be waking up. However, the occasion was climbing, and I soon found myself wide-awake and cheery after brushing my teeth. My climbing partner Fran and I met up at Red Rock Canyon shortly after 6am. We drove along the Loop Road until getting to the "Sandstone Quarry" turnoff, and parked in the parking lot. After a quick rappel down into a ravine, we hopped straight onto the route. Fran led the first pitch, and I followed. Upon my arrival at the second pitch, we swapped leads. AMAZING. I LOVE the altitude. To date, it's the highest (in elevation, and body chemistry) that I've been on rock. The route is "Man's Best Friend", a 2-Pitch 5.7 in Red Rock Canyon, NV. 160 vertical feet of high-quality ledges, cracks, and slopers. The crux is a great little balancey friction-fight, right beneath the anchors at the finish ; ) |
