LOUIS L. GOLDSTEIN
'Louis Lazarus Goldstein' (March 14, 1913 – July 3, 1998) served as Comptroller of the Treasury of the State of Maryland from 1959 to 1998. He was born to a storekeeper in the small town Prince Frederick, Maryland, and also died there. As a legislator in the Maryland General Assembly, he was known for his 11th-hour strongarming to get votes behind closed doors. He also owned land in every county in the State of Maryland in an effort to show his commitment to the entire state. He is famous for writing witty poems and reading them on the television and radio. The statue of Louis Goldstein, outside the Louis Goldstein Senate Building in Annapolis, was the statue used in the movie Batman with a new head to look like Goldstein.
Goldstein Hall at Washington College, his alma mater, is named for him. The Goldstein Award at WC's commencement awards the graduate with the greatest potential for success in public service.
