Story

This movie directed by Delbert Mann gives us the best of one of the most prolific comic trios in the American cinema: Day/Hudson/Randall. Although not as well known as Pillow Talk (1959), this romantic-comedy pairing of stars Rock Hudson and Doris Day earned an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. The story concerns the professional life in a marketing company located in New York. The movie literally laughs at three types of ambition and means to serve this ambition: the guy without any scruples who is never reluctant to lie and to use sex to get contracts and to step up (Hudson); on the opposite side the female executive who steps up only thanks to hard work and respect of the rules (Day) and finally the so called boss, who inherits this position from his father and who clearly lacks charisma and credibility as a manager (Randall). This opposition between the three main characters works quite well, mainly thanks to very good play and very subtle dialogs. These rich dialogs were written by Stanley Shapiro (who was already involved in the screenplay of the precedent success of the trio Day/Hudson/Randall, ''Pillow Talk'') and the television writer Paul Henning, and depict some social behaviours and economic mechanisms of the 1960s (which are still present).
Hudson stars as Jerry Webster, a Madison Avenue advertising executive who has achieved success not through hard work or intelligence but by wining and dining his big-shot clients, even setting them up on dates with attractive girls. Jerry's equal at a rival agency is Carol Templeton (Day). Although she has never met him, Carol is disgusted by Jerry's unethical antics and reports him to the Ad Council. Jerry avoids trouble with his usual aplomb, sending a comely chorus girl, Rebel Davis (Edie Adams), to seduce the council members. Jerry then promises Rebel a spot in commercials, so he shoots commercials starring her for VIP, a non-existent product. The commercials accidentally are broadcast on TV, thanks to perplexed company president Pete Ramsey (Tony Randall). Jerry has to come up with a product quickly, because Carol is again complaining to the ad council to get him kicked out of the advertising game for advertising a product which doesn't exist. He has the chemist Linus Tyler (Jack Kruschen). come up with VIP, an intoxicating candy patty. VIPs extreme effects lead to a one-night stand between bitter rivals Jerry and Carol, complete with marriage license. Carol has the marriage annulled as Jerry convinces the Liquor Industry to give Carol a quarter of their advertising. Jerry leaves to work in California only to be called back nine months later to remarry Carol just before she gives birth to their child.
