'Lower Styria' or 'Southern Styria' (; ;
Latin: ''Styria'') is a region in northeastern
Slovenia, comprising the southern third of the former
Duchy of Styria. The northern two-thirds of the former duchy lie in southeastern
Austria and are known as
Upper Styria.
Name
In Slovenia, it is simply referred to as ''Štajerska'', i.e. "Styria".
History
The Duchy of Styria was divided in 1918 after
World War I, with the
Kingdom of Yugoslavia receiving Lower Styria. Slovenia gained independence from the
Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991.
Political status
Lower Styria has no official status as an administrative unit within Slovenia (though a new law will establish provincial administrative units, it has not come into force as of February 2007)), although the association with the informal province (Slovenian ''pokrajina'') is very common.
Cities
The capital of Lower Styria is
Maribor. Other cities include
Celje and
Ptuj.
Tourism
Lower Styria is famous for its
white wine.
