LUXRAY

are one of the fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] ''Pokémon'' media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards, and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Luxray is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of ''Pokémon Diamond'' and ''Pearl''. The purpose of Luxray in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers. The name ''Luxray'' is a portmanteau of ''lux'', the SI unit of illuminance, or possibly Luxor, and ''x-ray''. 'Lux' is also the Latin word for 'light'. The Japanese name ''Rentorer'' is a portmanteau of the Japanese transliteration of the name of , a German physicist that discovered x-rays, and the Japanese word for .

Biological characteristics

Luxray resembles a fully-grown lion. It has long black fur on most of its body, while other parts of Luxray are light blue, creating a unique appearance, making it appear quite dark. Luxray has two oval ears beside its head and a long tail with a four-pointed yellow star at the tip. It also has three rings around the backs of its legs (the front are black), while Luxio has two and Shinx has one.
Luxray's gold, red-pupiled eyes are specially designed for X-ray vision, which enables this predatory Pokémon to spot hiding prey, even if hidden behind a wall.
The manes of female Luxray are about a third the length of their male counterparts.

In the video games

Luxray first appears in ''Pokémon Diamond'' and ''Pearl'', and is the final stage of the Shinx evolutionary line. It evolves from its pre-evolution, Luxio, at lv30.
Volkner is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to have a Luxray. He is also the last gym leader the player will challenge before taking on the Elite Four.
