Location
The station is unique in that it is situated at ground level beneath the CityLink tollway which is supported atop concrete columns situated outside the platform fencing.
The station is situated beside the Moonee Ponds Creek and surrounded mainly by factories and warehouses. The Kensington station on the Broadmeadows line is only 400m away and is significantly closer to the residential area, and handles a larger number of commuters.
Facilities
There are a total of two platforms at Macaulay. Platform 1 (to city) has a substantial brick building with a disused booking office, while Platform 2 (from city) has a small brick shelter of similar architectural style. Each platform has one of the smaller coin-only Metcard ticket machines, and the outbound platform in addition has a Telstra payphone.
Trivia
★ Melbourne band The Lucksmiths wrote song "From Macaulay Station", which references the neighbouring overpass and the station's industrial inner-Melbourne surroundings.
