MACQUARIE PARK, NEW SOUTH WALES

'Macquarie Park' is a suburb in the north of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 17 km north-west from the Sydney CBD in the City of Ryde. Surrounding suburbs include Marsfield, North Ryde, West Pymble, West Lindfield and Chatswood West.
Despite the fact that Macquarie Park is now officially a separate suburb from North Ryde, many still consider it a part of North Ryde and many places inside its boundaries, especially businesses, use North Ryde addresses. This has not really been considered a problem since the two suburbs share a postcode anyway. The use of North Ryde addresses is probably due to the fact that the area was North Ryde from the late 1800s, and that North Ryde is a more widely recognised suburb.
Major attractions to the area are the corporate prestige factor, aesthetically pleasing environment, close access to facilities such as the Macquarie Shopping Centre, Macquarie University, M2 Hills Motorway. The Macquarie Park railway station will open in 2008.

History

The area was once filled by market gardens, poultry farms, and vast tracts of bushland, with many beautiful picnic spots and waterfalls. The wholesale destruction of natural bushland saw the end of this part of North Ryde's 'Green Belt'.
The '"Macquarie Park Employment Area"' was originally part of North Ryde until the early 1960s rezoning of 'Green Belt' land to allow for industrial activities. The initial concept for Macquarie Park was based on the idea of a similar hi-tech industrial area surrounding Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. The goal being to provided for the interaction between industries and the University. As such, during the same period, development of the Macquarie University began on adjacent land.
During the 1970s companies such as Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Limited, Beiersdorf, Racal and Universal Press located their corporate headquarters in the area. Macquarie Park has since gained a reputation of being a leading high-tech industrial area in Australia. It attracts many local and international companies from high-tech fields including electronic, scientific, computing, medical, communication, pharmaceutical and business supply solutions.
