MADELEY, SHROPSHIRE


'Madeley' is a small town, now part of the new town of Telford in the borough of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. The town's parish had a population of 17,935 at the 2001 census. It was formerly a mining town serving the now defunct Kemberton Colliery.
Ironbridge was once part of Madeley, but is now in the separate parish of The Gorge. Parts of Madeley parish do however form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge.
Its main claim to fame is a barn in which King Charles II hid after the battle of Worcester in 1651, during the English Civil War.-

Sir Basil Brooke of Madeley Court, who was instrumental in the Industrial Revolution, former speaker of the House of Commons in the 17th century.

Basil Brush - famous 70s/80s puppet fox with boom boom catchphrase was designed and made by Emily Dewson of Madeley.

★ John Fletcher (born Switzerland) collaborator with John Wesley (founder of C18th Methodism)-Fletcher buried in Madeley Church (St. Michaels).
