Available Cartridges

The BFR comes in two basic models, one with a long cylinder for big rifle cartridges, and one with a more traditional revolver cylinder length (called "short" by Magnum Research). Note that some models that use identical bores such as the .45/70 and .450 Marlin can be made with two cylinder for the same gun.
Magnum Research also makes these guns in custom calibers, so you may come across one not listed. They discourage the use of rimless cartridges in their revolvers due to mechanical issues.

Criticism

As with the S&W Model 500, the BFR encountered numerous complaints, mainly from gun control activists that claim the weapon is too powerful and thus a danger to police officers and the like. Some of this may be unfounded, as a handgun's main advantage is concealability, and the BFR's massive size means it could not be concealed under anything but a trenchcoat, and even then, the gun is awkward to hide. It is also not a choice firearm for any type of carry other than hunting, especially in a large caliber such as the .45-70, it holds a limited number of rounds, and being a single action pistol, is difficult to fire repeatedly.
