MAMMA MIA!
:''This is about the musical. For its musical film adaptation, see Mamma Mia! (film).''
'''Mamma Mia!''' is a musical with a book by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA.
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, have been involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production, while Agnetha Fältskog has not, though she was present at the Swedish premiere and final show.
The title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia." However, the story has nothing to do with the story of the group; the only link is that Agnetha and Björn and Benny and Anni-Frid became couples in the springtime of 1969, and as the foursome went on vacation to the island of Cyprus the following springtime of 1970, that is also where they performed together for the first time, and thus, ABBA was born.
The musical includes such hits as "Super Trouper", "Dancing Queen", "Thank You for the Music", "The Winner Takes It All", and "SOS". It has been seen by over 10 million people worldwide as of July 2003.[1] Estimates as of 2006, is that 30 million have now seen ''Mamma Mia!'', although this has not been verified. Since its opening in 1999, the production has grossed US$1.6 billion in earnings [2]
A film version of ''Mamma Mia!'' is currently being filmed in Pinewood studios, England. Filming began in mid June 2007 and the finished film is due to be released in November of 2008 in the U.K. It stars Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep in the lead roles of Sam and Donna, respectively.
The story revolves around Sophie and her mother, Donna (originally played by Siobhán McCarthy). Sophie is about to marry her fiance, Sky, and wants her father to give her away at her wedding; Sophie isn't sure which of three possible men he might be so she invites them all to the wedding without Donna's knowledge. Donna is quite confused when three of her past lovers show up.
''Mamma Mia!'' premiered in London on April 6, 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre, transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The original London cast included: Siobhán McCarthy (Donna), Louise Plowright (Tanya), Jenny Galloway (Rosie), and Paul Clarkson (Harry). The North American premiere of the show was at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Ontario on May 23, 2000. After fourteen previews, the Broadway production opened on October 18, 2001, at the Winter Garden Theatre. The original Broadway cast included Louise Pitre (Donna), Judy Kaye (Rosie), and Karen Mason (Tanya).
On May 15, 2005, ''Mamma Mia!'' surpassed the original Broadway runs of The Sound of Music, The King and I, and Damn Yankees with 1,500 performances. As of September 9, 2006, it is the 24th longest running Broadway musical of all time.
In June 2005, ''Mamma Mia!'' played its 1,000th performance in Las Vegas, becoming the longest running, and most successful Broadway play ever in Las Vegas.
On April 19, 2006, it was revealed on Playbill.com and Broadway.com [3] that a film version of the musical will be made and will arrive in cinemas in Summer of 2008. It will be directed by Phyllida Lloyd with Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson as executive producers. Meryl Streep will star as Donna Sheridan along with Pierce Brosnan as Sam Carmichael. The movie will also feature Christine Baranski, Colin Firth, and Julie Walters.

As of October 2006, the musical has been performed in 9 languages: English, German, Japanese, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, Flemish, and Russian, with, in addition to the West End and Broadway productions, productions currently playing in Hamburg, Las Vegas, Stuttgart, Moscow, Essen, Gothenburg, Tel Aviv, Fukuoka, and Seongnam, South Korea. There are planned productions for Berlin and Barcelona, and productions have closed in Toronto, Tokyo, Utrecht, Seoul, Madrid, Osaka, Daegu, Stockholm, and Antwerp. Lone van Roosendaal has played Donna in 3 different countries and in 3 different languages: Dutch, Flemish and German.
The story takes place on a fictional Greek island, where Donna owns and manages a taverna, catering to locals and tourists alike. Her daughter Sophie, who is engaged to a young man named Sky, has always wanted to know who her father is, but Donna won't talk about her past. Sophie discovers her mother's old diary and finds entries in which Donna describes intimate dates with three men. Sophie believes that one of these men is her father, and sends each an invitation to her wedding without letting her mother know.
The three men arrive a few weeks later: Harry "Head Banger" Bright, Bill Austin, and Sam Carmichael. Each has his quirks. Harry is a nerdy British banker with a unique laugh; Bill is a stereotypical Australian traveller; Sam is an American architect who had an affair with Donna while engaged to another woman. In addition, Donna has invited two of her old friends; Tanya, a rich three-time divorcée, and Rosie, an unmarried woman who likes to have fun. Twenty years ago, the three of them were a singing group called "Donna and the Dynamos."
Sophie initially believes Bill is her father because his aunt ''Sophia'' left a large amount of money for family. (Donna says Sophie was named after a Sophia, and that the money to build the taverna came in an inheritance.) Sophie asks Bill to give her away at the wedding, and he agrees. Soon thereafter, Harry and Sam figure out what's going on, and each approaches Sophie. Each of the three possible fathers now believes that he is giving Sophie away.
Sophie sends notes to the three men saying that her mother is going to give her away instead. In the meantime, she and Sky are having second thoughts about their impending marriage: they feel that they do not know each other as well as they should.
Sam confronts Donna about his possibly being Sophie's dad, and a bitter confrontation ensues: Donna tells him that she's glad that she raised Sophie alone, without a man's worthless "help." As the scene progresses, it becomes more evident that Sam and Donna are still desperately in love, angrily and against their wills.
At the wedding, it is finally made clear to all three men that Sophie's paternity is undetermined, but everyone involved agrees that it doesn't matter which is her biological parent: Sophie loves all three and they are all happy to be "one-thirds of a father," a part of her life at last.
Sophie and Sky announce that they have decided not to marry--at least not just yet. Instead of letting the wedding preparations go to waste, Donna and Sam swallow their pride and are married instead. (Sam's first marriage, it turns out, was a failure). Meanwhile, Rosie and Bill have become attracted to each other. Harry, on the other hand, who has made frequent references to his "other half" throughout the show, is revealed to be in a committed homosexual relationship with a man named Laurence (Nigel in some productions and Tim in the Russian version). Sophie and Sky leave the island to travel the world together.
During the preview period in London, the musical had the song "Summer Night City" just after the prologue. The Summer Night City scene was a wedding rehearsal and during the song, Ali, Lisa, Tanya and Rosie arrived on the island. Now part of the song is used to connect the end of "The Winner Takes It All" and "Take A Chance On Me".
Donna hums a few lines of "Fernando", when she dusts the taverna just before she sees her three former lovers, and in the Swedish production, Sky (Tom in Sweden) sang a few lines of "King Kong Song" before starting to sing "Lay All Your Love On Me".
