Character information
Original figure and accompanying mini-comics
The earliest portrayals of Man-At-Arms presented him as a skilled warrior who seemed to have been through and triumphed in several wars. It was hinted but never confirmed that in this version he was around the same age as He-Man.
1983 series
In the 1980s animated series, Duncan is a slightly older inventor, soldier and foster-father of Teela, as well as a mentor to Prince Adam/He-Man. Although he is the Man-At-Arms, it is generally shown that he is more interested in science and discovery than in war, and only heads into battle if absolutely necessary. He bares armor which is slightly different from that of the standard uniform of the royal guards and a mustache, added by Filmation to make him look more mature. He has an understanding fatherly voice and rarely loses his temper. However, he is often infuriated by court jester Orko, as his magic tricks often backfire on him. Although he is a frequent character in the series, he commonly appears dumping his problems on Adam while he stands around making distasteful puns and references to his mustache. Duncan is one of the most regular characters to appear during the show's three-year run since he is one of the three people who know He-Man's secret identity, as explained in the intro-sequence of the cartoon. The Sorceress of Castle Grayskull asked Man-At-Arms to take Teela and raise her as his own because the Sorceress felt that she could not raise her daughter and protect Castle Grayskull at the same time. In the Filmation series, Duncan is voiced by Alan Oppenheimer.
Masters of the Universe film
In the 1987 ''Masters of the Universe'' film, he is portrayed by Jon Cypher where his character is both a bit of a joker and an unorthodox soldier, causing a brief argument with Teela in one scene.
2002 series
The 2002 cartoon portrays Duncan as a much more masculine, serious and arguably darker character, as well as being shown to have more of a connection with the Sorceress than previously shown. He is also depicted as an officer with the definite rank of General instead of the undefined, but still high echelon, position he has in the Filmation cartoon. It is also revealed that he is the brother of Fisto. He is voiced by Gary Chalk, who had voiced He-Man in ''The New Adventures of He-Man''. In the new series he is Teela's adoptive father, but it is strongly hinted that he, or his brother Fisto, may in fact be the biological father of Teela.
Cultural references
Man-At-Arms appears in the ''Robot Chicken'' episode "Badunkadunk" voiced by Jamie Kaler. On the Eternia News Network, he holds a press conference concerning about the sex romp between Teela and Beast Man. He plans to file a law suit against Beast Man for what happened. In the Where Are They Now segment of the episode of "Toy Meets Girl," Man-At-Arms is killed in a hail of Crips gunfire on the streets of South Los Angeles.
