Growth

Over the last 10 years Maple Grove has grown into one of the more populous cities in the Twin Cities area. As of 2000 it was the second fastest growing city in the state behind Lakeville, Minnesota. Recently a huge expansion has gone on in Maple Grove called the Arbor Lakes Project. This has added many new businesses especially in the new inside-out mall. Some of the notable businesses include Borders Books & Music, Sharper Image, Circuit City, Caribou Coffee, Subway, TGI Fridays, DSW, Lowe's, REI and a Holiday Inn & Suites with a Waterpark.
The city has approved a new large development separate from the Arbor Lakes Project called The Grove. The Grove will be headlined by a hospital, Super Target, and Home Depot as well as numerous stores.

History

Winnebago Indians were the first and only inhabitants of Maple Grove until in 1851 when Louis Gervais arrived in the area and settled there. Four years later in 1855 the city growth was so great that a church, a town hall and many homes were under construction.

Miscellaneous

The former Governor of Minnesota and pro wrestler Jesse Ventura used to call Maple Grove his home before he and his family moved to Dellwood.
Maple Grove is also the home of a large regional Boston Scientific manufacturing plant and office complex.
With the addition of The Fountains at Arbor Lakes (an 850,000 square-foot outdoor shopping complex), Maple Grove has the second largest shopping area in the state, second only to the Mall of America in Bloomington. Arbor Lakes includes Main Street and the surrounding big-box stores, The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes and The Fountains at Arbor Lakes.
As of late January 2007, Opus, the primary developer of the burgeoning Arbor Lakes complex, has announced that it is exploring the possibility of a regional mall east of The Fountains at Arbor Lakes. It would be at least 1 million square feet (90,000 m²) in size, nearby Ridgedale in Minnetonka is 800,000 square-feet (70,000 m²), and would potentially include anchors Macy's, Von Maur, Nordstrom, and Herberger's. With the addition of The Grove in the northern part of the city (the location of the North Memorial/Fairview hospital complex), Maple Grove is likely to have nearly 6 million square feet (600,000 m²) of commercial development at build out.
