ODU has award-winning faculty, including Dr. Cynthia Jones, Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Ocean, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Jones is the Director of ODU's Center for Quantitative Fisheries Ecology and the first scientist ever to serve on the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. Jones was named Virginia Professor of the Year in 2004 and received an Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia in 2005.

Shell Planting
Take a ride with Jim Wesson into the mouth of the Great Wicomico river to unload 3,000 bushels of oyster shells. He's the director of conservation and replenishment at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) and each spring he overseas projects to fortify oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries. This year his group planted about 300,000 bushels of oyster shells in total. It's an impressive process that requires coordination with many different groups, but as Jim points out it is "absolutely essential."

IMARES -- the Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies -- is a part of Wageningen University & Research. Wageningen IMARES specializes in strategic and applied marine ecological research. The institute was established in mid 2006, the result of a cooperation between RIVO (the Netherlands Institute for Fisheries Research), elements of Alterra and the Department of Ecological Risks within the TNO. Products and services include field studies, real-life scale experiments, exploratory studies at the laboratory level, data management and modelling. Buck Island Reef National Monument
The National Park Service's Buck Island Reef National Monument in St. Croix, USVI and the NOAA Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment -- Biogeography Branch have produced a video documenting the scientific work underway between the two agencies and its partners to produce data and information to support the management of marine resources found within and around the Monument. This video illustrates the agency partnership and showcases cutting-edge technologies to map and monitor the marine environment in an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of the marine protected areas (MPAs). Buck Island Reef National Monument is one of the few fully protected marine protected areas in the National Park System, and is "one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea."
