National Team Career

He made his debut for the German national football team against Switzerland on February 7, 2007.
Germany won the match 3-1, with Gomez scoring Germany's second goal. Gomez gained his second cap for Germany, coming on as a substitute for Kevin Kuranyi in a EURO 2008 qualifier against San Marino, scoring two goals that contributed to a final 6-0 victory.
He is hailed the "New Striker Hope" of German football.

Injuries

Gomez broke his hand on March 10, 2007. Fox Sports News reported: "Gomez struck the medic's medicine box with his hand while being treated on the field during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg." This injury seems minor, however, compared to the torn ligament in his left knee that he contracted in that same game and that may sideline him for six weeks. [1]

Comeback

On May 12, 2007 in the Bundesliga match against Bochum he came off the bench making his first appearance after his injury. The VfB was 1:2 down at this time. When he affected the ball first time he poached an equaliser. At the end, ''VfB'' defeated Bochum (3:2) and went two points clear heading into the Bundesliga's final weekend where they won at home against Energie Cottbus and became Champions of the Bundesliga.

2007/08 season

He was elected German Footballer of the Year 2007 before the start of the season.
