The Most Rev. 'Martin John Amos' (born December 8, 1941) is the current Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of, Davenport, Iowa.
Bishop Martin John Amos was born in Cleveland. He was educated at Benjamin Franklin elementary school, James Ford Rhodes high school, Borromeo Seminary College, Wickliffe, and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. He holds a Master of Science in Education. Bishop Amos was ordained a priest of the Cleveland diocese, May 25, 1968. He held several pastoral assignments after ordination, and later became academic dean of Borromeo Seminary High School. Bishop Amos was serving as pastor of St. Dominic Church, Shaker Heights, when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland, April 3, 2001.[1]
On May 3, 2005, former Bishop William Edwin Franklin of Davenport submitted his resignation, per Cannon law, as he had turned 75 years of age. Franklin retired on October 12, 2006, and Amos was immediately appointed as Franklin's replacement. Amos was formally installed as Bishop on November 20, 2006 becoming the eighth bishop in the Diocese's 125-year history.
Since taking office, Amos has had to deal with the fallout from the sexual abuse scandal that had engulfed the church. Two days before he assumed office, the Diocese of Davenport filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
