MARYLAND ROUTE 216

'Maryland Route 216' is a Maryland state highway between Laurel and Highland, primarily within Howard County. The name for Route 216 is Scaggsville Road.
Route 216's southern terminus is in Laurel at the intersection of Maryland Route 198 and Seventh Street; the highway continues northward and westward to the intersection at Maryland Route 108 in western Howard County. Route 216 also has junctions with Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 29.
Realignment of Route 216 between I-95 and US 29 was completed to address expected growth and increased traffic demands. Funding was provided by the developer of property in the northeast and northwest quadrants of the I-95/MD216 interchange. [2]

In the mid-20th century, Route 216 extended eastward from Laurel into Anne Arundel County. A half-mile section of this road still exists from MD Route 198 toward Oak Hill Academy (Maryland), as Old Portland Road. This portion was broken from the main section of roadway by the construction of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway [3] in the early 1950s. State highway maintenance records list this section as '216B'.
A 0.2 mile section of "Old Camp Meade Road" -- between the Maryland City fire station and Whiskey Bottom Road (where it's blocked with barriers), and continuing across that road behind some businesses -- is referred to as '216A' in state highway records. [4]
The rest of this former eastward section of MD 216 was subsumed by MD 198 (Fort Meade Rd), as well as business and residential development.
