Route description

The route begins at a skewed intersection with MD 140 in northern Reisterstown. After intersecting with MD 128 the route runs north as a two-lane semi-rural country road. MD 30 intersects with many minor routes along its path, including MD 91 in Fowblesburg, and MD 88 and MD 482 in Hampstead. After entering Hampstead the route is known as Main St, a heavily congested arterial street. Beyond Hampstead it resumes its Hanover Pike moniker and continues running northwest, meeting MD 27 in Manchester. North of Manchester, MD 30 intersects MD 86 and MD 496 before continuing to the Pennsylvania state line, where it becomes PA 94.
The route is dotted with many small communities, neighborhoods and houses; traffic levels are therefore rather elevated, given the otherwise rural nature of the route. Traffic levels in Hampstead and Manchester are high and MD 30 through these towns is often congested and even halted due to the high levels of traffic.
Hampstead Bypass

Due to the high levels of traffic and severe congestion that MD 30 experiences through Hampstead, the Maryland State Highway Administration has begun the construction of a bypass for MD 30 that will allow through travellers to avoid downtown Hampstead.
Route of bypass

According to the MDOT SHA Current Projects web portal, the bypass will be routed around the west of Hampstead, starting at a point on MD 30 slightly to the north of Wolf Hill Drive. The bypass will be 6.0 miles long, and will not only have full access controls, but will also contain two grade separations - one at Houcksville Road and one at Shiloh Road. The bypass will end north of Hampstead, near Brodbeck Road, and will include three at-grade roundabouts - one at the southern terminus, with a spur to Wolf Hill Drive; one at MD 482, and one at the northern terminus, just to the south of Brodbeck Road. At both termini, the original road will be demolished and slewed to make the bypass the through route.
Activities to date

As of June 2007, the engineering for the bypass is near completion, and physical construction, having begun in Spring 2006 and currently at an advanced stage, is expected to be completed in Fall 2008, with the route being opened to traffic in Summer 2008.
Currently, the Houcksville Road grade separation is near completion, with the new bridge complete and the original right-of-way under conversion into a frontage road. The Shiloh Road grade separation is at an advanced stage, with the southern bridge abutment complete and the northern one under construction. Other activities in June 2007 include the installation of permanent stream crossings near MD 482 and bridge abutment construction at Indian Run.
