MASTER OF BUSINESS AND ENGINEERING

'Master of Business and Engineering (MBE®)' is a master's degree in business and engineering, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines.
The Master of Business and Engineering program is designed for university graduates who have achieved at the highest level in an engineering, business or scientific Bachelor degree. Structured around a dual education system, the MBE combines Masters level academic studies with practical work experience on a results-driven project, carried out on behalf of sponsoring organisations. As such, this unique program facilitates the integrated transfer of knowledge between industry and academia, while giving organisations the opportunity to trial top level management trainees and benefit directly from the implementation of the processes and systems they develop.

Program Structure

Organisations are invited to sponsor postgraduate students for the Master of Business and Engineering program; meeting the costs of tuition fees in return for utilizing the students’ expertise in a project management role. The degree structure comprises 17 weeks of on-campus academic study and 28 weeks of full-time project work.

Academic Component

The flexible structure of the MBE allows students with a business-based undergraduate degree to develop foundational engineering and science skills, while students with an engineering or science-focussed undergraduate degree can enhance their management skills.
'The core subjects are therefore divided into:'
- ''Business subjects'' for engineering
and science graduates; or
- ''Engineering subjects'' for business
and commerce graduates.
'Additional elective streams are chosen from:'
- ''Business management subjects''; or
- ''Information technology subjects''.

Project Work Component

Each student is matched with a sponsoring organisation who is able to utilize their knowledge while developing their practical skills. Ideally, students will take a management role in a resultsdriven, time-specific project that allows them to apply their theoretical knowledge to a wide range of practical competencies, encompassing technical and/or business disciplines, as well as the all-important interpersonal skills. With engineering students focusing on business skills and business students focusing on engineering skills, potential projects can be drawn from many different corporate divisions and departments.

Example Projects

Examples of projects undertaken by MBE students at Steinbeis include implementing quality management, complaint processing systems relating to computer software, research and development of engineering systems, and the sourcing of component suppliers in China.

Benefits To The Companies

Benefits to the companies involved ranged from improved customer relations through to cost reductions of up to AUD$2 million per annum. Students will work full-time for the sponsoring organisation for a period of one year, less the time allocated to on-campus academic study blocks and two weeks’ vacation. The program may be extended over a two-year time
span to accommodate longer-term projects.
