Personality

May is a highly manipulative and Machiavellian individual. She is obsessed with having a baby of her own and her desperation for one is evident in her tenacious, dominating control of her husband, Rob whom she treats like a child due the fact that she has none of her own. This could explain her dependance on him. May is a very arrogant invidual who appears supremely confident in her sexual attractiveness, intelligence and superiority over her love rival, Dawn Swann. It is obvious that her immense ego has been damaged by Rob having an affair with Dawn, leaving her even more insecure and paranoid. She exhibits behaviour consistent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Her personality has earned her the nickname "Mad May" from the media.[1]

Storylines

May is Dr. Oliver Cousins's replacement as General Practitioner for Walford, and clashed with Dot Branning on her first day in the job. Dot was about to start smoking in the café and May told her it was a non-smoking area. Dot called her a "rude woman" and left. They later met outside the surgery where May told Dot smoking was bad for her health. Dot said she'd just seen the doctor, who said smoking was fine in moderation. May said she didn't remember seeing Dot, and introduced herself as the new doctor. She has since visited Billy and Honey Mitchell to check up on their baby, Janet, who has Down's syndrome. On 13 November May was revealed to be the wife of Rob Minter, an already established character who had been having an affair with Dawn Swann. May and Rob had been on a break from their relationship when he met Dawn, but had since got back together and started trying for a baby through IVF.
In December 2006, May and Rob moved into the flat above the surgery. She revealed that she had previously lost a baby at six weeks pregnant. May discovered that Dawn was pregnant by Rob, and Rob paid Dawn to have an abortion, but Dawn spent the money on herself and waited to have the abortion on the NHS. May's fertility treatment was unsuccessful, so she then knew she was unable to ever become pregnant again. When May realised that Dawn was still pregnant with Rob's child and would not be able to conceive herself, she asked Dawn to sell the baby to her and Rob. Rob kept Dawn sweet by saying that he loved her and he wanted to leave May and raise the baby with Dawn, whilst his loyalties really lay with May. Meanwhile as May's behaviour became increasingly erratic and obsessive it became clear that the doctor was losing her mind.
When Dawn challenged her over Rob, May revealed the entire plot to Dawn, who then tried to miscarry the baby by drinking a bottle of vodka and taking at hot bath, however before she could get in the bath she passed out and her best friend Carly Wicks arrived and got her to hospital. Rob went to the hospital to win Dawn's heart back but Dawn rebuffed him. Rob told May that Dawn was stalking him and May summoned Dawn around to her house and told Dawn that she was suffering from hormone problems, which had caused her obsession with Rob. Dawn told Rob to tell his deranged wife the truth then left the house.
When May demanded what was going on Rob told her he was leaving her and left the house going after Dawn and leaving May bitter. The next morning, she smashed the flat up with Rob's golf club, before going out for a drink with Jane Collins, when she gave her wedding and engagement rings back to Rob, before leaving. She then took a terrible revenge upon her husband by informing the company he works for that he registered a credit card for Dawn under the name of Jane Beale, costing Rob his job.
On 1 May May's sister Verity visited her with her two children, and found the nursery in the flat, presuming May was pregnant. When Rob's car got town away a representative from Rob's work went to May's flat and informed her they wanted the car back as Rob had lost his job. May boasted that she got his car town away and told Dawn that Rob lied to her when he told her he'd got his job back. Rob then grabbed May in a rage and hurled her violently across the pub onto a table. The next day was May's birthday and she went to Rob and Dawn's flat and announced she would no longer pay the rent, meaning that they would have to move out due to Rob having no income after losing his job. Later in The Vic Rob announced to May in front of Verity that he was filing for a divorce and Dawn told of her being pregnant with Rob's baby, leaving Verity confused. At the surgery Verity tried to comfort May, still believing she was pregnant, but May started to cry hysterically and locked herself in the treatment room. After telling Verity she needed to be on her own, May took two pills intended for a patient.
On the day that Rob and Dawn were moving out of the flat, May went and initiated an argument with Dawn, which culminated in a scuffle at the top of the steps to the front door, in which Dawn fell to the bottom. May was horrified and anonymously phoned for an ambulance to take Dawn to the hospital. She fretted over what she had done all day and took several more pills. Dawn and her baby were revealed to be in good health, and May attempted to visit Dawn to apologise for what she had done. Dawn ordered her to leave and threatened to tell the police what May had done to her and therefore get her sacked from her job. May pleaded for Dawn to forgive her, but Dawn screamed for Rob, and Rob ordered May to leave or he would report her for assault. May sobbed that she would never harm her own baby, shocking Rob and Dawn with her fixated belief that the baby belonged to her. Rob taunted about about her infertility and said that she would never have a child. May ran home in tears.
May later went to see Rob, begging him to spare her and not report her to the police. She swore she would sign the divorce papers, and vowed she would never interfere in his life again and that she was no longer fixated with the baby Dawn was carrying. Rob agreed to leave her alone but only if she would return the favour. May returned home, where she drank more wine, swallowed more pills and went into the nursery. She crossed off a day on the wall calendar; and looked at the box for 5 July, where she had written "My baby is born".
She later invited Rob round for dinner to apologise and attempted to seduce him. Tearing away from her, Rob fled to the room which she had converted into a nursery and saw the calender on the wall with "My baby is born" written on it. May entered the room and once more attempted to get Rob to come back to her. Rob told her she was out of her mind and attempted to leave but May wouldn't let him go and a struggle ensued.
May was later seen with a black eye and later made allegations of assault against Rob. Later when Rob confronted her in her office May appeared frightened. May later accused him of hitting her saying "What're you going to do? Hit me again?" Rob failed to contradict her.
In a bid to take further revenge on Rob, May exaggerated the injuries which he had caused her. Because of May, everyone in Walford then believed that Rob was either a criminal or a wife-beater.
When May was challenged over her theft of a patient's prescription by Naomi Julien, May managed to deviously turn the tables on the nurse by accusing her of stealing the pills. Naomi was horrified.
May later seduced Rob and the two of them once again plotted to get their hands on Dawn's baby. However, Dawn discovered a locket that May had given Rob containing a photograph of the two of them together. Enraged, believing that May was trying to turn her against Rob, Dawn stormed over to the doctor's office and shouted at her, calling her "pathetic" and telling her that she would not succeed in driving her and Rob out of the Square. May told Dawn that she would be amusing if she wasn't so tragic and informed that she and Rob had had sex on her very desk the previous week. Rob told Dawn that this wasn't the case and Dawn forced him to swear on his baby's life that he was telling the truth; Rob reluctantly did so. The next day, to lull her into a false sense of security Rob proposed to Dawn and she accepted. He then took her away to stay in his parents' house, but when they arrived, May was waiting for them in the hall.
On June 18th 2007, May had Rob restrain Dawn while she drugged her with a substance that would help induce the baby sooner. Rob started to get cold feet about the procedure, especially after Dawn told him that May planned to perform an elective caesarean. Rob spoke with May about Dawn's fate, who assured him that Dawn would be freed upon completion of the surgery. However, Dawn fought back. Attacking Rob and hitting him with a vase, she escaped downstairs to find May waiting for her. May attempted to attack Dawn, but she stabbed May in the arm, and ran to May's car. Starting the car, Dawn frantically tried to drive off, at such moment May jumped up the window shouting "GIVE ME MY BABY I WANT MY BABY" in a hysterical manner. Dawn managed to escape, leaving May visibly saddened. Dawn returned to Walford and was in her home when Rob appeared through the backdoor. Dawn pulled a knife on him, upon which he informed her that May had been sectioned. Shortly afterward Mickey and Keith returned with Gary and diffused the situation.
Rob was evidently lying about having had May sectioned as she was later seen standing alone in her house, dressed in a night shirt and clutching a baby doll. She appeared profoundly disturbed. She was later seen sitting in her car outside the hospital in which Dawn was giving birth, glaring at the building. Then Keith, Mickey and Gary left the hospital after visiting Dawn and her baby girl and May and Rob overheard Keith joyfully talking to Rosie over the phone about baby Summer. May was crushed after hearing the good news; Rob tried to talk her into leaving Walford and going away, just the two of them. May retorted that there was nowhere for them to go and nothing for them left anywhere. Rob insisted he was as hurt as May but she ignored this and ordered him into going into the hospital to find out about baby Summer. He couldn't as Dawn had ordered that he be kept away from her. May decided to take matters into her own hands: earlier she had written a hefty cheque for ten thousand pounds and hidden it inside a card of congratulations addressed to Dawn. She then entered the hospital, despite Rob's admonitions, and having talked her way past the nurse at reception (she identified herself as Dawn's GP) was seen cradling Summer saying "You're all mine". As May was about to exit the room, Dawn woke up, telling her to "PUT HER DOWN". May insisted that she meant the baby no harm and suggested that Dawn could still go through with the original plan, offering her a cheque for £10,000 and then doubling the offer. Dawn nonetheless refused and ordered May away. The next morning Dawn left the hospital and returned home.
Rob arrived first with flowers for Dawn, Carly let him into the Miller household despite her misgivings. Rob pleaded for forgiveness from Dawn, insisting that the kidnap plot was all May's idea and that he still loved Dawn and wanted to marry her. He produced a ring, but Dawn rebuffed him pointing out that he told the police about the 'contract' to sell the baby to May. Dawn punched Rob to the floor, then Keith hauled him out of the front door.
Sometime afterwards May arrived asking to say goodbye to baby Summer and offering the toys and baby clothes she had amassed during Dawn's pregnancy. Cunningly, Dawn had called the police who arrived during the delay created by allowing May to see Summer. As the police arrived May lamented that she thought Dawn was being kind in letting her see the baby but instead it was just a ruse to get her caught.
May was then arrested on suspicion of kidnap, as she was being led away she bitterly pointed out that she would've been able to give Summer "twice the life" Dawn and the Millers ever could. This was the last time she was seen.
