The 'City of Fremantle' is a Local Government Area in southern metropolitan Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The City covers an area of , and lies about southwest of the Perth central business district.

History


The City of Fremantle began in 1871 as the Fremantle Municipal Council. On 3 June 1929, it was declared a City - Western Australia's second after Perth, which was declared in 1856.[1]

The city has been divided into 6 wards, each of 2 councillors. Each councillor serves a four-year term, and half-elections are held every two years. The mayor is directly elected.
