MCMILLAN AND WIFE
'''McMillan & Wife''' was a lighthearted American crime drama television series that aired on NBC from September 17th, 1971 to April 24th, 1977. The series premiered in the fall of 1971 in 90-minute episodes as part of the wheel series ''NBC Mystery Movie'', in rotation with ''Columbo'' and ''McCloud''. Initially airing on Wednesday night, the original line-up was shifted to Sundays in the second season, where it aired for the rest of its run. In 1977, Saint James' character was killed off and the show ran for its final season under the title '''McMillan'''.
The TV series McMillan & Wife centered around 40 something San Francisco Police Commissioner Stuart McMillan (Rock Hudson) and his attractive, bright but slightly daffy 20 something wife Sally (Susan Saint James). Mac and Sally were the perfect cutting edge couple for the San Francisco 1970's, where they attended lots of groovy parties and charity benefits always prior to solving robberies and murders. John Schuck appeared as Sgt. Charles Enright and Nancy Walker was Mildred their maid, both as comic relief.
Like the other shows in the ''Mystery Movie'', ''McMillan & Wife'' was an immediate hit. It appeared regularly in the form of syndicated reruns on local and cable American television.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment has released the first Season of McMillan & Wife on DVD.
★ The address for the couple was once given in the show as 250 Carson Street. Two different exterior shots were used for the same interior set. The primary one used was a town house located on Greenwich Street in San Francisco. The second exterior shot was a free standing house.
★ Sally wore a long red football jersey nightshirt with the number 18 emblazoned on it.
★ In 1977 the show was renamed McMillan. Because of a contract dispute between Saint James and the studio, Sally's character was killed off in an airplane crash and Mildred left to run a diner. Mac got a new apartment and a new housekeeper, Agatha (Martha Raye) who was Mildred's sister. No mention was made of the McMillans' child.
