MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN

Mecklenburg-Schwerin (peach), 1866-1934.

'Mecklenburg-Schwerin' was a duchy (from 1815 a grand duchy) in northern Germany, formed by a partition of the Duchy of Mecklenburg. Ruled by the Nikloting dynasty, it was a relatively poor state along the Baltic littoral. After the fall of the monarchies in 1918 resulting from World War I, it became the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. On 1 January 1934 it was united with the neighbouring state of Mecklenburg-Strelitz to form the State of Mecklenburg (today part of the Bundesland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
