MEDICAL INVESTIGATION
'''Medical Investigation''' was an American Medical drama television series that began September 1, 2004, on NBC. It ran for twenty one hour-long episodes before being cancelled in 2005. The USA Network began running reruns on January 6 2005, in what is called a "repurposed" broadcast. It is, however, no different from the original broadcasts. High definition reruns of the show are being broadcast on the Universal HD channel. In January 2007 the series began airing on NBC Universal's mystery and crime-themed cable channel, Sleuth. The series was co-produced by Paramount Television (now CBS Paramount Television) and NBC Universal Television Studio.
The series featured the cases of an elite team of medical experts of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) who, unlike in real life, investigate serious public-health problems, such as sudden outbreaks of serious diseases. Medical investigative duties are normally the responsibility of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health departments, while the NIH is primarily a disease-research and -theory organization. This lack of attention to the real world is thought to have contributed to the show's demise, though plenty of shows suspend reality for their premises.
The series exists in the same television universe as ''Third Watch'' and, by extension ''ER''. A special two-part crossover event aired on February 18, 2005, establishing the television-universe connection by featuring the ''Third Watch'' and ''Medical Investigation'' teams working together.
