same as the Torino's with minor trim
differences.
MONTEGO: The Comet was dropped and the Montego
became the base mid-sized car. Base engine was
a 250ci, inline 6.

1971

1971 Mercury Montego and Cyclone
(NOTE: The Montego info is provided as a reference as it closely
related to the Cyclone)
The 1971 Mercury Montego was basically a carryover from 1970 with the
exception of the grille being toned down a bit in a criss-cross pattern.
Wheel lip and window moldings were now standard on base models. In the
drivetrain department, the compression ratios dropped quite a bit and the
selection of engines decreased.
1971 MERCURY MONTEGO
MONTEGO: Base engine was still the 250ci Inline 6.
Model Price Production
65A--2 Door HT, 6P $2777 9623
54A--4 Door Seadan, 6P $2772 5718
MONTEGO MX: The MX had chrome rocker panels and MONTEGO in script on the
rear quarter panel. The main interior differences between the base model
and the MX was it was a bit plushier.
65B--2 Door HT, 6P $2891 13719
54B--4 Door Sedan, 6P $2891 13559
71C--4 Door Station Wagon, 6P $3215 3698
MONTEGO MX BROUGHAM: The Brougham had upper body pin stripes and Duluxe
wheel covers. In the interior, the door panels had woodgrained trim with
chrome. On the wagons, a dual action tailgate was standard.
65D--2 Door HT, 6P $3085 2851
57D--4 Door HT, 6P $3157 1156
54D--4 Door Sedan, 6P $3073 1565
71A--4 Door Station Wagon $3456 2121
CYCLONE: Direct carryover from 1970.
65F--2 Door HT, 6P $3369 444
CYCLONE GT: Again, a carryover from 1970. The center "shotgun" grill
now had a "GT" emblem in place of the open circle in the previous year.
The base engine was the 351 4V.
65H--2 Door HT, 6P $3681 2287
CYCLONE SPOILER: The wider body stripes started at the front of the fenders,
and were placed higher on the body. The rear spoiler was now painted black,
instead of body color. The base engine was now the 351 4V, but many were equipped
with the optional 429CJ or 429CJ ram air. A Cyclone Spoiler was not available
with the 429 Thunder Jet, 429 Policew Interceptor, nor the 429 Boss.
The center "gunsight" on the grille was larger than the previous year, but
did not have an emblem like the GT. Bumper mounted turn signal lenses were
now amber, chrome trim was deleted from the rear edge of the hood, and the
side view sport mirrors were located differently. The interior now sported
molded one-piece door panels, but the rear side panels were still embossed
vinyl over cardboard. It came with 7: wide wheels with hub caps and trim rings,
Traction Loc differential, and a 3.25:1 rear axle as standard.
