MICHAEL BREEN (AUTHOR)

'Michael Breen' is a Seoul-based consultant and author of ''Kim Jong-il: North Korea's Dear Leader'' and ''The Koreans''. He has lived in Korea for many years and has a very intricate grasp of Korean culture, society and history which makes him a prominent figure in the country's collection of expatriates.
He has covered North and South Korea for several newspapers including ''The Guardian'' (London), and the ''Washington Times''. He is married with three children and spends six months of the year in Korea and six months in the United Kingdom. His eldest child is called Sasha, the youngest is Avielle otherwise known as "Bel-Girl" and the middle child is called Jonnie or otherwise known as "Bel-Boy". The Breen family reside in a small village in the South East of England called Hassocks[1].
He said it might be difficult to curtail North Korea's purchase of luxury goods. The North had people overseas purchase the goods and ship them back to the country, or bring them in personally. Kim used to have envoys buy elaborate toys overseas for his three known sons when they were children. "For the average comrade on the streets of Pyongyang, a luxury good would be a hamburger, or maybe even a second bowl of rice," Breen said.
