Biography
Although an acting audition granted him acceptance to Lincoln Park High School, by senior year Stahl-David planned to become a history teacher and attend Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, Ill.
In 2001, the summer after his high school graduation, Stahl-David trained at Steppenwolf Theater, where his college plans were swayed by Sheldon Patinkin, a teacher at the program and chair of Columbia’s Theater Department.
As a freshman at Columbia, Stahl-David was cast in three different theater productions. Playing the lead in The Matchmaker was his favorite, he said.
During his four years at Columbia College Chicago, Stahl-David appeared in plays at the Goodman Theatre and the Steppenwolf Theatre. Patrick Clear, a Chicago actor, played Stahl-David’s father in “The Goat” at the Goodman.
Michael Stahl-David earned his first television role as Sean Donnelly, the youngest of four Irish brothers profiled in the NBC drama The Black Donnellys. He originally read for the role of another Donnelly brother, Kevin, which he said went horribly because he came in with the wrong look: a white tank top, baggy pants and slicked-back hair.
He also has a part on Law and Order Criminal Intent, which Stahl-David described as his rite of passage into New York acting.
Stahl-David will be a character in a movie project codenamed Cloverfield. The trailer was presented before the movie Transformers in 2007.
