Developed in the early 1950s, the area is between Midland and the former Helena Vale Racecourse, and its name is a composite of the two places.
Its southern boundary is the Great Eastern Highway, and eastern the Roe Highway.
A substantial amount of the housing in the suburb as known as ''State Housing'' , a significant amount of this housing has been re-developed as part of a government renewal project under the name of 'Eastern Horizons'
