MILFORD, COUNTY DONEGAL

'Milford' (Irish: ''Baile na nGallóglach'') is a town in County Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. Located north of Letterkenny, in one of the country's remoter regions, it contains a post-office, six supermarkets, a noted veterinary practice, 9 pubs, one national school and two newly built second-level schools, as well as an adult education centre. Milford also has a new top of the range Health centre, a new Library with council offices and a new fire station. The town has a five star hotel on the outskirts and is within close driving distances to four different beaches;Portsalon, Rathmullan, Downings and Tramore. There are also two 18 hole golf courses located at Portsalon and Downings. The population of the town is around 1499 - 2001. There are also 9 pubs in the area which play traditional irish music.There is also a new chinese restaurant which entertains its customers with chinese music and drama.
The Irish Báile na nGallóglach literally means 'town of the Gallowglasses' The Gallowglasses were Scottish mercenary soldiers who came to Milford to help the native Irish against the English invaders. A battle between the Irish, helped by the Gallowglasses, and the English took place at the top of the hill in the town and this is where the name comes from.
Milford was founded in the 1700s by the Clement family and once had a renowned bakery.
