History

Milwaukie High School's existence dates back as early as 1907. Originally constructed in 1925, the three-story building which houses the school today is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Milwaukie.
The school's first mascot, the Maroons, became unfavorable by some students because of its similarity to the word "moron." The student body voted on a new mascot as a result, and the Mustang was elected to replace the Maroons.
The ''Milwaukian'', a school newspaper produced by students, was named the best high school newspaper in the nation in 2006, and the student publication was awarded the Quill and Scroll International First Place Award, for newspaper excellence. Along with the newspaper, the school offers a variety of other media outlets for students, including the student yearbook, ''The Maroon'', the video production program, ''Pulse Media'', and the hands-on work experience in the technical field, ''MHS Tech Cadre''.

Living History Day

On the day before Living History Day, students decorate the entire school with patriotic remembrances of the time periods of prior American wars. On Living History Day itself, thousands of veterans are welcomed into the school. The Goldstar Assembly is also held on this day, in the auditorium to honor Milwaukie High School students who died in past wars. A candle is lit for every student who was killed, and one by one each candle is extinguished. During Living History Day, veterans relate their wartime experiences to the students and staff. Students learn first-hand, and the veterans get an opportunity to share their stories. At the end of Living History Day, The Staff performs a mock USO style show. As the Veterans enter the Gymnasium the students and staff of Milwaukie High School stand and applaud for several minutes to honor the veterans for their service to the United States.
