Description
Mostly green with red on the forecrown, lores, cheeks and sides of the neck, Mitred Conures usually have a varying degrees of red feathers scattered throughout their bodies.
Habitat
Mitred Conures are typical of the dry woodlands of the interandean valles of the central Andes. Found from central Peru to La Rioja and western Cordoba in northwest Argentina, they can range up to 3,800 m.a.s.l. (13,000 feet above sea level).
Captive pet trade
The subspecies seen in American aviculture is the Aratinga Mitrata mitrata. Popular as as pet, Mitred Conures are considered an outgoing and playful. They are even used as "watch birds", given their loud, piercing alarm call. As most parrots, they tend to be devoted to their human owners.
