MODERN LIBRARY LIST OF BEST 20TH-CENTURY NOVELS

In 1998 the Modern Library created a list of what are, in their opinion, the 100 best novels published since 1900. This list is called the 'Modern Library List of Best 20th-Century Novels'.
''Ulysses'' by James Joyce topped the list, followed by ''The Great Gatsby'' and ''A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man''. The most recent novel in the list is
''Ironweed'' by William Kennedy (written in 1983), and the oldest is either ''Sister Carrie'' by Theodore Dreiser or ''Lord Jim'' by Joseph Conrad, both published in 1900. The highest-rated novel by a woman is ''To the Lighthouse'' by Virginia Woolf at #15, and the highest-rated by a black author is ''Invisible Man'' by Ralph Ellison at #19.
A separate list of and the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century was created the same year. A list of reader choices was published separately by Modern Library in 1999.
