Cross-Country Skiing
'Mont-Ste-Anne''s Cross-Country Ski Centre features 212 km of trails, including a 125-km network for skating stride, which makes it the 'largest cross-country ski centre in Canada', and the second most important in North America (after Royal Gorge, CA)
History
Ten trails and four lifts (including a gondola) were featured on the ski hill inauguration day on January 16, 1966. This very year, the resort was already making its appearance on the world scene with the Du Maurier International, followed the next year by the first Canadian Winter Games. Skiing at Mont-Sainte-Anne does go back to the 1940’s though. Volunteers and skiers from Beaupré and Québec City, armed with a variety of tools, cut the first trail in the Fall 1943. Three years later, the first skiing competition was taking place, the competitors having to climb on foot up the mountain with all their equipment. The only trail available was then groomed « manually » by local volunteers using their skis while climbing up. Today’s technology certainly makes this task difficult to image.
Since it became privately owned in 1994, millions of dollars have been invested yearly to maintain and improve the resort, as surely as it receives over 400 cm of snow per year.
Mountain Biking
Renowned as the Mecca of mountain biking, Mont-Sainte-Anne features the most spectacular mountain bike network in eastern Canada.
Host of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup since its first year of existence, in 1991, Mont-Sainte-Anne was also host, in September 1998, to the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.
