MOUNT OF TRANSFIGURATION

One of the mysteries of the New Testament is the identification and location of the mountain where Jesus underwent his Transfiguration or metamorphosis. Three candidates have been suggested:

★ Mount Hermon. The most popular candidate and the best, for two reasons: It is the highest in the area (and the Transfiguration took place on "an exceedingly high mountain"), and it is located near Caesarea Philippi, where the previous events reportedly took place.

★ Mount Tabor. This is a traditional locale, but it is not that high, and it is in the middle of a densely populated area. The town of Nain is on top of it. The story suggests an unpopulated area.

★ Mount Sinai. This has been suggested by Benjamin Urrutia on the basis of the presence of Moses and Elijah (two prophets traditionally associated with Mount Sinai). This is, however, unlikely since Sinai is rather geographically remote.
