History

The University was founded in 1933 as 'Beckley College', a junior college, and continued as such until 1991, when it achieved four-year status and was renamed 'The College of West Virginia'. In 2001 the school was renamed 'Mountain State University'. Recently, Mountain State has expanded into the eastern panhandle of West Virginia in Martinsburg. However, the expansion has not been received well by the community. Mountain State University has had problems attarcting qualified faculty and mainatins and open admission for students. This has lead to complaints of the University being nothing more than a diploma mill. In addition, it has earned a reputation of having an administration which is unqualified and abusive toward faculty, staff and students leaving serious questions of their conduct.

In sports, the school competes in the NAIA conference, with men's basketball, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer teams, and softball teams.
The school won the 2004 Men's Division I NAIA national basketball championship.
